Symptoms of breast cancer is to know.

Breast cancer can be felt.  If you are a woman, you need to become aware of your breast, which means that you know how your breasts normally feel.  In this way, you can tell if something isn’t right.

1.  Breast lump
Get medical examination when you notice a lump in your breast that persists after your next period, appears after you go through the menopause or gets bigger with time. This is a first sign that you should be very aware.

2. Changes in breast shape or size
As mentioned earlier, breast cancer can be felt. If you notice any change in the size or shape of one of your breasts, please visit your medical doctor immediately for an examination.

3. Change of shape in the nipples
You should be on the alert, when you notice any:

  • change in the shape of your nipples,
  • you get any unusual discharge from your nipples (particularly if this contains blood),
  • you develop any skin changes on or around your nipples (or other breast areas) that don’t disappear by themselves.

Many men believe that they cannot develop breast cancer. In fact, men  can – although breast cancer in men is about 100 times less common than in women. So if you’re a man and develop a new lump or other change in your breast tissue, go to see your medical doctor to get it checked out.

If you are a teenage boy and develop a – sometimes tender – swelling behind your nipple area, you most likely have little to worry about. This swelling is usually due to hormonal changes in puberty and goes over time.

Other women’s cancer
There are many different cancers affecting only women. Here I list the main symptoms to look out for if you are a woman and suspect a cancer:

  • Bleeding after the menopause
Vaginal bleeding bleeding that starts after you’ve been through the menopause (also known as ‘the change’) is a sign that you may have genital cancer = such as cancer of the lining of your womb (called endometrial cancer) or cancer of the neck of your womb (called cervical cancer) – unless you’re taking hormone replacement therapy, in which case you may continue to have regular light monthly bleeds, which are nothing to worry about.
  • Bleeding between periods
Bleeding between periods is common and in many cases harmless, particularly in younger women. However, if the problem persists or you bleed after sexual intercourse, see your medical doctor for further assessment and to exclude abnormalities of the neck of your womb called the cervix) as well as infections such as chlamydia- a sexually transmitted infection)
  • Skin changes on your genitals
See your doctur for any persistent or worsening changes on the skin of your outer genitals (your vulva). These changes are most likely due to benign causes, but occasionally a non0healing or intermittently bleeding skin lesion needs to alert you to the possibility of vulval cancer. Vulval cancer isn’t that common – but the risk of developing it increases with age.
  • Vaginal discharge
This discharge is commonly due to thrush (a common fungal infection also called candidiasis), benign vaginal infections (called bacterial vaginosis) or sexually transmitted infections (STs). If you suffer from persistent vaginal discharge – particularly if it’s a blood-stained – see your medical doctor for a full pelvic examination and inspection of your cervix.
